Everglades National Park

Tarpon
(Megalops atlanticus)

This tarpon was layed up under a fallen tree and hit a brown bucktail jig.

These are one of the greatest game fish to catch on a rod and reel. From 10 to 200 lbs., they will test your ability as an angler. They are known for their jumping ability. Here in the Everglades and 10,000 Islands, you can catch them year round. The best time is spring and summer when Tarpon make there migration up the coast. During winter months they cay be found deep into the Backcountry creeks and bays.

If fishing for tarpon you should use a little heavier tackle. Reels that can hold 15 to 30 pounds test line and heavier leader 60 to 100 pound test. Tarpon also have a very boney mouth so make sure your hooks are sharp. They can be taken on a wide variety of baits: mullet, pinfish, threadfin herring and blue crab are some of their favorites.

Artificials like top water plugs, sub surface plugs, soft plastics and jigs work well.

Fly fishing for Tarpon is also very effective - 11 to 13 wt. rods work best. Look for rolling fish or fish layed up just under the surface.

You should try to get your fish to the boat fast as possible. The longer the fight, the less of a chance they will survive being released. Tarpon also have an air bladder which allows them to gulp air. This allows them to live in water without much oxygen. Be very careful with these fish - they have been known to jump into the boat. It’s happened to me twice.
