Redfish, or red drum, are a very popular here in Southwest Florida. They have a wide range from the Texas Coast all the way to New Jersey. Some of the largest ones are caught in the Carolinas. The world record is just over 94 lbs. Redfish are mostly bottom feeding fish. They can be seen with their tail out of the water feeding on shallow grass flats and around oyster bars. Shrimp and crabs are a large part of their diet. Pilchards, pinfish and mullet will also produce lots of hits. Sight fishing with flies or artificial baits, like: soft plastics, jigs and spoons are very effective. Just remember, these fish are very spooky in shallow water. Here in Everglades National Park, we have a large population of redfish and catch them year-round. The bag limit is one per angler, with a slot size limit between 18 to 27 inches. Redfish are a very good eating fish. We also catch black drum which is a cousin of the redfish. Both of these species are great fish to catch because of their hard pulling power.
